Play-mobile

We've been collecting play-mobile since my oldest was little.  We love almost everything about it - except that the houses are small and it's a little difficult for little hands to maneuver inside of them.  So, I came up with an idea:  drawer shelves.

We also had great fun picking out papers and fabrics to add to the floors and even put up a few backs.  This farm scene is green felt for the grass and blue clouds for the sky.

I had ace hardware cut plexi-glass to cover the scenery because you know I have a thing for plexi-glass.

'Want wood floors in your kitchen?  No problem.
I'll admit that these toys should be age appropriate as in - when the baby gets in this room because someone forgot to close the door it looks like an earthquake hit and it makes the person in charge of it cry. (I know that's a run-on sentence and I don't care.  Yeah, I'm a rebel that way.)

So.  Here are two of the towers for your viewing pleasure:

Sometimes I think I'd like to go live in there...

  1. Oh my goodness, that is GENIUS. Did you take a regular bookcase and put the shelves onto drawer rollers?

My three oldest love Playmobil (who am I kidding, I love Playmobil) and they don't love having to put it away after doing their set-ups. They would love it if my DH made this for them!

  8. I'm looking forward to when you decide to visit me in College Station, TX and set up my home. We move into the new house January or February, likely (once it's actually built). You'll have free rein! LOL

  9. Danya, I followed a pin to get here and oh my, I'm so glad I did. I've enjoyed reading through many of your posts and I appreciate your humor, insight, and heart.

I've had Playmobil in my home since I was a child (which was quite some time ago), and I think before my firstborn made his appearance, I'd already started a stash for eventually 6 kids. The kids know that they don't get to take it when they move out - they have to bring my (eventual) grandkids back home to get their hands on it!

Your system is brilliant. Please tell me where you got your slide out cabinets.

  10. Love it! We had Little People when I was growing up (village, farm, depot, etc) and loved building elaborate setups, which my mom let us leave up for days (our play room doubled as the laundry room, so she was really a good sport). This seems like a really great way to play and store with these kinds of toys!

    1. I bought these shelves at Target (closet section) many moons ago. I don't think they have them anymore but I think taking the front and sides off of drawers would work as well. Have fun!

  12. Can you elaborate on the supplies? You originally used a shelf and added the drawers and rollers? Did you modify the drawers or did you find some that already came that way?

    1. Hi Deanne! We bought these "roll out drawer/shelves" as is and did not need to modify them. We only added the flooring, backing, and plexiglass for cover. Thanks for stopping by!

  13. LOVE it!! We too have a major Love affair with Play mobile. My son would set up elaborate scenes and we'd leave them up for weeks at a time. (Made vacuuming difficult) This is a marvelous idea. My son is 15 now and I miss the Play Mobile. It's all packed away in his closet. I've sold off many of the other toys but I can not part with the PM. Enjoy!!!

  14. This is a fantastic idea! It would also be ideal for my son's Lego collection. Storage and set-up areas are always issues and this would keep everything in one place.

  15. This may be a silly question, but you pull the drawers out completely to play with, right? I love the idea, it is such a great invitation to play.
